How to choose a countertop sink: practical guide and Artceram models

The countertop basin has become the centerpiece of the modern bathroom. Visible from every angle, it can have its own color and shape, transforming a simple countertop into a design element. However, to ensure it looks good and remains practical every day, a few details should be checked before ordering.

In this IdeaCasa guide, you will find what to check and the Italian ceramic Artceram models you can choose for your project.

1. Final height: countertop + basin

A countertop basin adds height above the furniture. Therefore, the countertop is usually set lower than for an under-counter basin. As a guideline, the rim of the basin should be approximately 85–90 cm from the floor. Calculate: furniture height + countertop thickness + basin height.

2. The right tap

A countertop basin requires a tall tap mounted on the countertop or a wall-mounted tap. A standard tap is too short: the water would fall on the rim. Also check that the jet falls approximately in the center of the basin.

3. The waste and overflow

Many designer basins do not have an overflow (the safety hole below the rim). In this case, you need a waste without an overflow. For a clean look, you can choose the Artceram click-clack waste, chrome or with a ceramic cap, coordinated with the basin.

4. Is the trap visible?

If the furniture is open or the basin sits on a metal structure, the trap is visible. An Artceram cylindrical trap, chrome or ceramic then becomes an aesthetic detail, not something to hide.

5. Countertop space

Leave side space for soap, a towel, or accessories and check the depth of the countertop. A basin that is too large on a narrow countertop makes daily use inconvenient.

What do you place the basin on?

In addition to a classic countertop, Artceram offers supports designed specifically for countertop basins:

Color: white or a chromatic accent?

White remains the safest choice. However, a colored basin on a wooden or stone countertop can become the bathroom's focal point. IdeaCasa's suggestion: keep the walls and floor neutral and leave the color only on the basin. Colors on the screen may differ from the actual finish; confirm the finish before ordering.

Pre-order checklist

  • Final height of the basin rim.
  • Tall countertop tap or wall-mounted tap.
  • Waste with or without overflow, depending on the basin.
  • Visible or hidden trap.
  • Countertop size and side space.
  • Exact color code.
